I am trying to load drivers for a Canon MF 5700 laser printer. I have tried every method that I have found in numerous forums. None of them work. I have the driver setup files that are on my last computer which I have copied on to my new computer. When I

run the setup file it tells me that I have an older version of the driver running on the computer and to uninstall it before running the setup program again. Again I have tried the suggestions I have found on the forums for uninstalling drivers but to no avail.

It s a bit surprising that you were able to successfully able to install the printer on your previous 64-bit version of Windows 7 using a 32-bit driver.  You may not have copied what you think you copied.  It s also unclear what earlier version might be

installed on your current computer, assuming that you hadn t installed this printer before on this computer.

When you go to Devices and Printers, is the Canon printer shown there.  If so, right-click and select Remove Device.   If there is more than one icon for the Canon printer, remove all of them.

Select  your HP printer and then click on the link for Print Server Properties that appears in the tool bar at the top of the Devices and Printers window.  Click on the Drivers tab.  If there are any Canon drivers listed, select them it, click the

Remove button, select remove driver and driver package and click OK.  Close the Print Server Properties window.

Go to Control Panel Programs and Features.  If there is any Canon software relating to your multifunction device, uninstall it.  If you have non-printer/scanner Canon products, e.g., a Canon camera, you don t have to remove software relating to those other

2.  Your version of Windows should be automatically detected, and you should see the following:

If that s not what you see, be sure to select Windows 7 X64 in the Operating System drop-down box.

Click the to the left of the File Description to see the file name MF5770_MFDrivers_W64_us_EN.exe and the Download button.  Also click the to expand the How to Download and Install section.

Check the box and click the Download button.

Follow the rest of the instructions.  If you read the Readme.txt file as instructed, you may notice that says that the software is only for 64-bit versions of XP, Vista, and Server 2003.  That should be OK.  Vista drivers usually work for Windows 7.

Follow the directions for Vista.  You may want to print the Readme.txt file.

Because I don t have one of these products and haven t installed one, I can t be sure but I suspect that the Found New Hardware box may appear as many as 3 times:  once for the printer, once for the scanner, and once for the fax.  Be sure to read the Found

New Hardware box when it appears so you know what hardware Windows is trying to install.  This may be where you went astray.  The following is from the Readme.txt file:

6. On the Browse for driver software on your computer screen,

click Browse to specify where you saved the

x64 DRIVERS folder, and then click Next.

When you browse to the folder that was expanded from the downloaded file, you may see 3 INF files: CNXRPUA6.inf, MF12SCN.INF, and MF5700AU.INF.  To install the

printer, use MF5700AU.INF.  The first file CNXRPUA6.inf is used to install the Fax and the other file MF12SCN.inf is used to install the scanner.

Included in the files that are expanded when you run the downloaded exe file is a pdf file named PCA_Notice_en_us_R.pdf.  If you find and open this file, you ll see a notice to the effect that a Windows 7 Program Compatibility Assistant warning box may

open after the installation is completed.  If you see this box, which says that the program might not have installed correctly, just select the option that indicates that everything is OK.
